Island of Doom by Arthur Slade

Modo is shaken to his core to find out his parents are still living.  He and Octavia are determined to find them.  Of course, the Clockworld Guild is looking for them, too...

I won a contest that Wendy Lamb Books held offering a copy of this book (thank you).  I have read the others in the series and was very pleased to get this copy of the final assignment in this series.  Check with your local bookstore for a copy.  If you haven't been reading this series, I'd suggest getting them all; you won't be disappointed.

This is a cross between steampunk, fantasy, and high adventure.  Modo is a shapeshifter.  He's been taught to fight extremely well, he has few friends, and he hates the Guild.  Now he wants to find his parents and see why they gave him up.  He supposes he knows, but he'd still like to meet them and perhaps find the love of his parents.

Modo was taken to the nursery at Notre Dame because he was such a malformed baby.  That's how he got adopted by the man who turned him into a secret agent.  Trying to find his parents is dangerous and heartbreaking for him.  He ends up losing one of his best friends.  Nothing goes like he planned.

Modo is a character I found it very easy to relate to.  His deformity can only hidden by a mask or by shapeshifting.  Many of us hide behind a mask in our daily life.  It may be invisible, but it's there.  I wanted a happily ever after for Modo, but he hasn't found it yet.

While this book ends this series, Mr. Slade might write more about Modo.  There is an open-ended finish to this story.  More books could be written or Modo might just ride off into the sunset.  I'd like to see Modo come back again.  As he's grown, he's settling into the life he has and now he's going make his own future.

What say, Mr. Slade?  Might we see more of Modo?

Happy reading.
