Night Corridor by Joan Hall Hovey

Caroline Hill has spent nine years in a home that cared for those with mental illness.  Her illness came from losing the man she loved and having her baby stripped from her arms and put up for adoption.  She entered a dark, blank world and didn't want to come out again.  By the time she improved both of her parents were dead; she had no other relatives.  Her nurse at the home helped her find an apartment and a job washing dishes right across the street.  Caroline had to take each day one at a time.  She had trouble even leaving her room...

The author and Goddess Fish Blog allowed me to read an ebook of this story.  It's available on Amazon now.

I found the story line intriguing.  If you've been in a facility for nine years and went in at a young age, how do you get out and meld into the real world?  Especially if you have no relatives to guide you?

The author does a good job of expressing Caroline's fears.  She's afraid to displease anyone.  When someone at work starts sexually harrassing her with comments, she tries to ignore him.  When he loses his job, he comes after her.  She's very surprised when someone else defends her and knows her name; she doesn't know him.  She really does, but she doesn't remember him then.

Caroline walks a tightrope.  Fitting in, doing a good job, meeting a new guy she likes a lot are all a bit stressful for her.  She also has to be on guard because there is a serial killer in the area and he's killing women who have her same hair and eye color.

The author offers you a good look at how the mind works and makes her killer especially creepy.  The story is fast paced, you empathize with Caroline early in the story because her parents didn't treat her well, and you feel like the killer is stalking you.  I think you'll remember this one after you've read it.

Joan will be awarding a piece of Micmac jewelry - silver dreamcatcher earrings (her main character in Abduction learns she is of Micmac ancestry) to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour (USA ONLY).
