The Orphanage of Miracles by Amy Neftzger

The story starts with an orphanage where the children are supposed to be finding or making miracles.  No one tells them how, they don't know what they look like and they're forbidden to enter the garden holding them.  So how are they going to make a miracle when they don't know how or what they look like?

This is an unusual fantasy.  There are two tales being told here that appear to have nothing to do with each other but eventually merge into one story.  That's a different touch.  I also like the odd characters; not all of them are human. 

Kelsey is a young girl in search of a miracle.  Her parents need one or they will die from lack of food.  She's a headstrong young girl that's a bit foolhardy and she's determined to succeed.  Along the way, she meets an oversized snow leopard and a boy who can't speak and she travels with them.  While she travels, she's also learning a few things on the way.

Ms. Neftzger's characters are all free thinkers and they tend to do things as a team, even if they aren't taught that skill.  That's part of what makes this story work.  All in all, this is like a fairy tale with little lessons along the way.  This is written for ages 9 and up, and they should enjoy the read. I would have enjoyed a bit more depth and had some remaining questions when I was done with the story, but younger readers probably won't.   If your young one likes fantasy, don't miss this one.
