A Weaver Beginning by Allison Leigh

Abby moved to Weaver to start a new stage in her life.  She was raised by her grandparents.  Grandma had Alzheimer's and was in a nursing home, and Grandpa had died.  She's raising her little brother and needed to move so the house could be sold and she could find a new job.  When she's moving in, she finds out the house across the street has a handsome helpful male who cleans their sidewalk and makes a snowman with her brother.  He's very reserved and very hands off, but he's also very intriguing.

Sloan is in Weaver because his sister lives there and an undercover assignment from his past almost caused her harm.  He feels guilty about that as well as another woman's death, so he's not going to get involved with another woman.  He's a wanderer by choice and his heart can't handle more hurt.  He should know better than to assume that sweet young thing across the street will give up if he just ignores her and says no.

One thing that resonated with me is that he goes away for a while later in the story and thinks about a relationship with her.  He's trying to decide if he wants to commit to her and assume the responsibilities of a family.  My husband did the same thing.  At least he only took off for a weekend; Sloan is gone for months.  The good news:  Abby and I both had happy endings.
