The Litter of the Law: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery by Rita Mae Brown
Harry is a farmer and her husband, Fair, is a vet. It's fall in the country and a good day for a drive. At least it was until they pulled the car over to discipline the animals and found a scarecrow in the field. It's a scarecrow that used to be alive...
Bantam and Edelweiss allowed me to download an ebook of this story for review (thank you). It will be published October 22nd. If you haven't been following this series, there are several earlier books you can check out while waiting.
You'll learn a bit about soil management, organic vegetables and Indian history in this story. All those things are tied together with greed and that leads to murder.
Harry is in shock and can't understand why anyone would want to murder her friend. What they will do to honor Hestor is continue with the Halloween event she was setting up. Hestor was a bit weird, but she was well liked and sold organic goods. She also had a couple of other projects up her sleeve, but she didn't share them. When the Halloween tour turns deadly, it takes both Harry and her animals to bring down a killer.
The focus on environmental issues and Indian tribes got a bit overwhelming in spots and the killer wasn't too surprising, but I really enjoyed the animals conversations and word fights. If you enjoy this series, you'll want to read this one, too. Or you can begin here and maybe pick up some of the earlier books later.
Happy reading.
