The Trouble with Magic by Ruth Chew

Barbara and Rick Benton are bored staying at old Mrs. Cunningham's while their parents are away.  At least they are until they find this old bottle and open it.  Out pops Harrison Peabody and he's a wizard.  He can do anything he wants with his old umbrella, he just has to ask it nice.  It is a bit hit or miss, but that's part of the excitement.  Until things start to go wrong...

Random House Children's Books sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you).  It has been published in January, so you can find a copy at your local bookstore now.

There's a lake near Mrs. Cunningham's that the children like to visit, but it's polluted and has debris everywhere.  It also has an old sea serpent that Harrison knows.  The kids have great fun riding the serpent, but wish the lake was clean.  Harrison is willing to try to help, but he's living in the attic of the house and is trying to hide, too.  The worst part is when someone takes his umbrella by mistake.  Will they ever get it back?  Will they ever get the lake cleaned up?

Ms. Chew writes fantasy stories for ages 7-10.  They are fun to read, keep your attention and make you root for the young characters.  I find them charming.  Why don't you give her A Matter-of-Fact Magic Book series a try yourself?
