Shooting for the Stars: A Gil Malloy Novel by R. G. Belsky

Gil's career has been hit and miss.  He was a top reporter who somehow managed to go to the bottom and he's trying to get out of the hole he dug.  He's lost his wife, his home, and he's almost afraid his head will be the next to go.  He needs a new story.

Atria Books and Net Galley gave me the opportunity to read this book for review (thank you).  It will be published tomorrow, so you can grab a copy then.  You also might want to pick up the first one in this series so you'll have better background on Gil.  I haven't read it and had no problem with reading this one as a stand-alone.

Gil has a new editor, a young up and coming female.  She wants him to work with a TV journalist who is following a story that was thirty years old.  The story line sounds interesting and it's not really a matter of choice, so he's off to meet with the journalist.  She turns out to be an attractive young lady who has a new spin on how the movie star from long ago died in an alley.  His boss expects this to be a joint social media effort to promote the story and make both the paper and the TV show look good.  Gil's willing to participate but knows the TV journalist is scared.  She denies it, but she has bodyguards around her.

Things are going along fairly well when he finds that his TV journalist has been found dead in the same hotel room the movie star occupied before her death.  He was starting to fall in love with her and he's not going to ignore her death.  It's quickly solved by the police, but he doesn't believe her ex-husband murdered her.  He thinks it's related to the original star's death.

This is a complicated story with the past and the present connected in unsuspected ways and even some mob connections.  Asking questions can be dangerous and Gil finds that out up close and personal.  I like Mr. Belsky's main character who is quite human and has his own failings as well as skills.  The story was good even if it was a bit sad.  Life in the movie world was tough; staying alive was even tougher...
